I try to use the Quebec example to understand what is happening in Catalonia, but the above poster is right in that there are a lot of differences. The Canadian government has done a lot to appease French-Canadians and to make sure the independence movement does not gain strength again. Right now it is not very strong and only a minority of Quebecois want to separate from Canada. I think maybe the Spanish government could take a lesson from Canada if they do not want Catalunya to separate. But the cases are different. I remember the Quebec referendum even though I was just a kid living on the opposite side of the country in a place with very few French speakers and where it was not mandatory to learn French at school. I remember thinking it would be devastating if Quebec was to separate because it was such a part of our cultural identity as Canadian (also I was worried we would lose in the Olympics jajaja). I don't know if a Spaniard not living Catalonia would feel the same. On the internet, you see a lot of anger (but that may not be representative).

It’s not even close to the same. From what I understand, Franco forced all of Spain to be Spanish, whereas Canada has supported all French Canadians and their rights to their heritage, language and culture since the start. I also think it’s important to note that while Catalonia is a distinct region in Spain with a distinct culture, Quebec does not represent all French Canadians. There are sizeable populations in Ontario, New Brunswick, and Manitoba and there are a lot of English speakers living near the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec, especially Montreal. When you start to talk about separating based on culture, I think that Quebec’s case falls very flat compared to Catalonia’s.
I think that Canada is better with Quebec in it, and I think that Quebec is better off as a part of Canada.
