The Kiwi (bird) is the national bird of New Zealand. It has become iconic of New Zealand. People have just, over time, come to call us New Zealanders 'kiwi'. It's just a nickname.
But you are right - kiwi can also refer to the fruit 'kiwifruit' and also refers to the bird.

The kiwi(bird) is a bird that only comes from NZ but New Zealanders are considered 'kiwis' because well that's what they call us

All u have to do is either add too words or shorten the word and double the last letter or just leave it, and if you want add a last name.
E.g- adventure adven- Advenn Gritt

kiwi is the bird. so we get nicknamed kiwis as people. only foreigners call the fruit kiwis. we call them kiwifruit

@misokatsu: Kiwi is a type of bird only found in New Zealand. Kiwifruit (shouldn't be just kiwi, but some people seem to say that) is what the US rebranded Chinese Gooseberries during the Cold War (after the bird, which the fruit resembles) and the demonym for New Zealand is just the national bird... the kiwi.

They are the people of kiwi islands filled with kiwi birds and kiwi fruits. I think it would be enough reason to be called kiwi, haha.
Australians are also called kangaroos, too. Like similar reason.
