"Loyal" is more common while "allegiant" is formal and almost old-fashioned. "He is a loyal friend" or "She is a loyal customer" is a fantastic compliment (though slightly uncommon because most people have a smaller vocabulary).

"Allegiant" is very formal; in fact, I think of it as loyalty to an abstract authority or concept: "He was allegiant to king and country" is a typical usage. I hear this word very rarely (Amer. English)
