No, in America not a lot of things are taken "impolitely." We refer to foreigners as "foreigners" and not as "the person from..." because it is more natural for us to say; so you can call anyone "foreigner" here and usually no one will get mad.

I don't take offense to the word foreigner personally, I don't think it's impolite :)

The word itself is not impolite and most uses of the word are not either. However, some people may try to use it as an insult.

Exactly what @amyu316 said. And if you are not 100% positive that a person is not from the country you are in, calling them a foreigner might be offensive.
