I came across someone saying "favourite food?" to ask one's favourite food. I would say "What is your favourite food?" but does just saying "favourite food?" work in casual conversation? What do you normally say?

It's normal but it's more common in situations when a person has many questions to answer quickly, like in a TV show for example.

Yes. Sometimes people just use very short versions of sentences in conversations.
