I'd say fellow is someone who's working as an academic researcher

"Fellow" is basically another way of referring to a companion or colleague - someone who's doing the same sort of thing as you. For example "fellow workers" = people who are working with you.
It's also an informal word to refer to a man or boy. "Fetch my slippers, would you? There's a good fellow."
It's... fairly archaic, in both uses. And very British.

One possibility is they thought you are a guy :) Another possibility is that they are just using that expression to mean "person".
