"When I was watching the movie, I started to fall asleep."
Your sentence is fine (except that you need a comma after "movie"). "When" and "while" are often used interchangeably. I would say:
While I was watching the movie, I started to fall asleep.

@OldGeezer Yeah, I tend to forget the commas. I'll work on that. I also realized that the verb "start" can be followed by "to+infinitive" and verbs that ends in ing. I thought for a moment that I was going to be corrected (I think that this is the expression) with that verb. Thanks

You could say "While I was watching the movie, I started falling asleep," but I think "to fall" sounds better.
