They aren't very important. But it will make you sound more natural in everyday/informal situations. Contractions are common like:
Are not=aren't
Will not= won't
Do not= don't
It is=it's
Other slang words might be:
I get/understand you= gotcha
I'm going to=gonna
Interesting/good=cool
These are usually only used in speaking in informal situations but not in writing.

Depends on your age and if you are using English for work or not. If you are a teenager and you want to make friends with someone who speaks English, slang is very important. If you're a businessman, however, you should probably not learn it at all.
