I wanna know how to use "overlap".
"questions that overlap with a question which has already been asked"
in this sentence, it seems "overlap" needs "with" after the word.
but,
"The first portion does not overlap the first sub-pixel electrode"
in this case, "with" doesn't follow after "overlap".
what's the difference??

"overlap with" means the two things being compared share something in common. "overlap" without "with" means that something is physically covering a part of something else.
My vacation overlaps with John's vacation. = our vacations share some days in common
The engineering curriculum overlaps with the math curriculum. = the engineering and math programs have some classes in common
The rug overlaps the cables. = the rug physically covers part of the cables
When red glass overlaps blue glass, the overlap appears purple. = the red glass physically covers part of the blue glass
