@SirDrake: I think in written german there aren't big differences. However the pronunciation is different. Austria has a special austrian dialect. The souther the country is the harder it gets to understand the german. In germany it starts in bavaria. However there is on big difference. In germany, when we to talk someone we don't know well or we are not friends with, we use the formal SIE to address them. In autria it is more common just to use DU (you).

I, too, would say the pronunciation is the biggest difference. In Austrian and Bavarian German some vowels are pronounced differently or consonants are left out. In Germany some people like to say that Austrian is not a dialect but rather a disease of the throat ;)

Interesting.. Do either of you (or anyone) know if this applies to the German in Switzerland too?

Yes. In Switzerland the pronunciation is different and hard to understand for Germans.

Austrian is easy to understand but if someone from Switzerland starts to speak really fast I can't follow at all :D but I really like the Austrian accent.. The Bavarian accent is awesome, too.
(I'm from Hanover so it's "Oxford - german" = I don't have an accent at all 😳)

it's not just the accent, they also have different words in some cases (like American English and British English)
for example:
ger "Tüte" - aus "Sackerl" (shopping bag)
"Kasse" - "Kassa" (cash point)
"nein" - "nah"
If you Google it you can find many more examples.

I'm bavarian and yes it sounds a lot different than standart German, BUT there are many dialects in german that sound really different too, like Sächsisch for exemple.
