But is more versatile I'd say and slightly more common. Yet also has a meaning of time or readiness.
I want to save money, but/yet I keep spending my paycheck.
Your hotel room is ready but you must wait another hour to check-in.
The cake is not ready yet. It still needs frosting.

In the first sentence either "but" or "yet" work and in the following two only the one used works.

Here's a scenario where you could use both:
"I told Mary to come over in 10 minutes so we can have cake for her birthday."
"But the cake is not ready yet! I need more time to put on the icing. Tell her to come over in an hour instead."
