Pergunta sobre JAPÃO
Is it common to cook your own food in Japan if you're living alone? I heard many people say they just buy prepared food so I wonder if people don't want/know/have time to cook.

it depends on the person.
in my case, i just buy 惣菜 and i boil rice.
it's easy, but it's not that i'm too busy to cook meal by myself.

@tsuba So it's more out of convenience than anything, right? I imagined that maybe people don't cook because they get home very late and tired due to overwork

Also, depending on what you want to eat, buying convince store food or even eating out could be actually cheaper...
since for example fruits and vegetables are really expensive, whereas at a cheap place you could get a filling meal for just around 500 yen.

@sabine1011 Are they truly that expensive? I heard that there are premium fruits meant to be given as a gift and these are super expensive, but I don't see why buying regular fruits and vegetables in a regular supermarket would be that expensive, I mean, even if you go to a restaurant they buy products from the supermarket too, so I suppose cooking by yourself should be cheaper, I don't know.

well of course in normal supermarkets fruits aren't as crazy expensive as in those premium shops but they are still more expensive than for example in Germany where I live. In Germany, I can buy a kilogramme of apples for around 1€, In Japan I get only one single apple for around 100 yen, or 1kg for almost 1000 yen.
Here in Germany I eat fresh fruits basically every single day, but when I was studying in Japan fruits became a luxury I would indulge in only once a week or so 😂
I didn't pay that much attention to vegetables, since the dorm where I lived didn't have a kitchen, so even if I wanted to I couldn't cook^^;
