Down the street I think might be 道に真っ直ぐに歩くor このまま道に進んで, whereas along the street is通り沿いに. When I think of along the street I think of walking on the side of the street, and down the street as walking in the street(where cars are driving). lol
I usually use down the street in daily conversation.
Ex: Go down Burboun St. and make a left at the second light. You'll see the outlet mall on your right.
