But I agree with the comment above. They look at the quality of classes taken, the grades and the test scores more than rank.

In america, people can graduate on the honor roll, which means they were in the top 5-10% of the class. We also appoint one classmate from each graduating class as valedictorian, but that is not just grade based. Valedictorian usually is the "best" student both in grades and involvement with the school and the community.

@naiad_u does that person get anything from the school for that? Can they use it for college applications or is it more like bragging rights?

In college applications they usually look at grade point averages (GPA) so if you want a good GPA you need to do well in school consistently over four years. 4.0 is considered the best but it's possible to have a higher one. Also, colleges look at the SAT and ACT test scores that all high school students are required to take. If you do well on at least two of these three items, you're good to go.
