An American friend of mine is taking Japanese language classes in university. She's interested in Japanese traditional cultures and the relationship between the United States and Japan. That's why she has been learning Japanese. But she said she has been uncomfortable in the classroom because other students are into anime, manga, and even cosplays. They are always enjoying those topics. In American university, a number of Japanese language students are Anime freaks?

Yes there are some, but not all. Soft power from Japan has been really strong these past years. Hence, the large number of otakus enrolling for Japanese classes.

@Rocket-man Usually you'll find weaboos in middle school and high school Japanese classes. But even so, the students who are interested in anime, should be less annoying than they were in high school. In university, classes are studious so even if there are otakus, they most likely won't talk to you.
