when you say the you are referring to something or someone but when you say a you a specifying on someone or something for example this is the man i told you about and this is a man i love

If you are talking about a specific item you would use "the". If you are talking about a general item you would use "a".
examples
I want to buy a car.
I want to buy the car in this picture.
