@Lin2n Got it.
In this case, "things" refer to "anything you might consider important."
Say you first meet a guy in middle school. You then go the same high school as him, and in college you start to date him. You eventually marry him. What deep, dark secret could he possibly have that you wouldn't already know about because you've known him, or about him, most of your life?
But, if you meet a person for the first time in your 40s, well... who knows what their past might hold. Also, he might choose to leave certain "things" out you might think are important, like how many partners he has had, or crimes he has committed, or ...

I would need more context to explain what this means.
When something get's "left out", it means it is not included. When talking about a person, it also typically implies that the person not included would have wanted to be.
Sam got left out of going to the amusement park. <---- correct.
Sam got left out of going to the torture chamber. <---- technically okay, but sounds strange because no one wants to be tortured.

@davidj Thank you very much for detailed explanation.
The context is that a wife is about to tell her husband about her dark secret in the past for the first time. They are middle-aged, so I guess that's why she is saying 'late in life'. But I'm not sure what 'things' mean here.
