I ate an eel today. It was really delicious even though I didn't like it before. My mom used to say, "You will like it when you get older." At the time I could not understand what she meant, but now that I'm older, I really like eel.

多分 "ate an eel" → "ate eel" or "had eel"
"ate an eel" sounds like you ate a whole eel (which you may have done, but still..).
Similarly:
"I had chicken/beef/pork/fish today"
A: I ate a chicken today.
B: Wow! You must have been hungry!
A: No, no, I didn't eat the whole thing!

@hapybrian: Haha. I was so distracted by the fact that it should have been an instead of a that the ridiculousness of eating a whole eel slipped by. Thanks.

@hapybrian: my kanji is so bad. Thank goodness for dictionaries. Fun fact. If a Japanese person puts a w in part of their sentence it's like the same thing as 笑(わら) (LOL I'm English). You probably knew that but I figured our conversation might as well be educational at the same time.

Yes, I think "w" came from the gaming world, on games that didn't support Japanese input (All my Japanese Diablo 2 friends used it). Rather than writing "warau", it was shortened to "w", and even "wwww". (hahahaha).
One more for you -- 爆笑! (bakushou). Use it when you want to express a HUGE LOL. (Explosive laughter).

@hapybrian: sounds familiar. I might have the Kanji for laughter down after this conversation. Thanks!
