A grammatical question.
"And found that the subjects(women) were at a much lower burn than would be men of the accepted standard."
The part "would be man" confuse me. It looks like an inverted and elliptical sentence for me. So what's the full version of this part and the sentence?

Honestly, I don't think the sentence was very well written in the first place. I think they meant to compare the results of the women to men of similar age or other category.

I agree. This is poorly written. It means:
Women were at a much lower burn than men would be...
It doesn't really make sense out of context.

@RebeccaK0682 @prettyfaithful1 Thanks for answering. I suppose that "would be men of the accepted standard" looks better than "men of the accepted standard would be". So the author compromised the grammar for better looking of sentence.
