They mean the same thing. "Slay" is a more poetic and dramatic word, so it gets used a lot in books, movies, and fantasy stories, but not very much in normal life.
You won't hear a news person use the word "slay," but you will often hear stories of knights "slaying" dragons.
Also, "slay" is a now a slang term that means a woman is looking very sexy and powerful. It's used mostly by black women when they want to compliment other black women, but many other people have started using it as well.
"Yes, girl, slay!" = You look so good that it's killing people lol.
