A-levels are one type of qualification you can get after finishing secondary school, so they're usually done between 16 and 18.
You study for two years, and take exams at the end of each year. (Your first year exams give you what's called an AS, and your second year exams an A2; they're basically just halves of the A-level). You get grades from A* down to F.
A lot of universities require you to take specific A-levels (and get good grades) before you can study there.
