"The child grew up in Japan."
"The child was raised in Japan."
"The child was brought up in Japan."
All three of these are correct and mean the same thing! But "The child grew up in Japan" sounds like the child became an adult in Japan. The other two simply mean that the child lived in Japan in childhood.
