"selling off something" means that you have a concrete thing that is yours and sell it because of a good reason. See http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/sell: sell something ↔ off
"selling" is more general: for example if you are a car dealer, you sell cars. You are not selling one concrete car, but many cars. The cars may not even be your own, you may just work there.
