@Heldan Yes, the writer of the article is expressing a wish, that this player stay with the team. He has to, he just has to. But is is a desire, not an obligation. Not too strong.

They mean the same thing, although, I would say "in London" instead of "at London."

First, it is stay IN London, not AT. They mean the same, but "must" is stronger. "Is Tom coming home tomorrow?" "No, he has a little more work to do and has to stay in London" or "No, the police want to question him. He must stay in London".

He has to stay means more that somebody told him that he had to stay, it wasn't his own decision or some other force makes him to stay there. But he must stay at London means that he has his own reasons why he must stay and this decision is going from him, not from somebody else.
Examples:
-His dad told him that he has to do his homework.
-I must go to Iceland! It's my the biggest dream, I can't wait to visit this country.

@supernikola I see them as the opposite. "he has to do his homework", to me, usually means just that it is time to do his homework. Must is an imperative. "I must go to Iceland" is an imperative. One you put on yourself, but still a strong imperative.

Must is used for situation that people can't avoid at all. Have to is just a more casual obligation
