they mean the same thing. although the second one sounds better than the first.

I had lived in America for a year is past perfect.
Past perfect is good for showing that something in the far past was interrupted by something that happened later (but also in the past).
Ex: "I had been home for 5 hours when the police came."
"I had lived in America for a year..." sounds like something else must have happened.
"I lived in America for a year" is a standalone, completed action in the past.
