It isn't rude. It is formal though.
And yes, Cambridge dictionary says that it is used to thank someone to show you are grateful.

It isn't rude to say this, but some people can find it weird if you say it to them, as they don't want you to feel like you have to return the favour or do something for them. Thank you would be enough.
