What is the best way to say goodbye to a stranger (e.g., shop keeper)?
I have been using "selamat jalan" (them leaving) and "selamat tinggal" (them staying) but my daughter says they are too formal. She says "selamat tinggal" is like saying "rest in peace". :D Should we use "sampai jumpa" or something else?

"Sampai jumpa" is OK but still we don't really use that much in our daily life. Usually we say thank you (terimakasih) and "mari.."
"Terimakasih. Mari, Pak/Bu"
I don't know how to explain the meaning of "Mari", but it is like we say "let's go, come on" to them. But in reality we don't really ask them to go with us, it's just like a small talk or our way of showing politeness😅

I agree with the above answer. Selamat tinggal/jalan sounds like you are going to a faraway place and you're saying farewell to a beloved one before you go.
Sampai jumpa is also too stiff.
Mari is usually used for friends or neighbors, or at least someone you know, I've never used it to a stranger or shopkeeper (except a shopkeeper of a local store I often go to and already know)...
Usually after I say terima kasih I just bow my head slightly and go. It's the standard way of greeting and showing gratitude.
