In learning basic japanese, where do I start, will it be better learning the alphabet/phonetics first or learn the phrases? And which phonetic alphabet do you prefer for beginners hiragana or katakana?

It depends on you.
If you are good at listening, you should learn the phrases.
After accustoming yourself to Japanese phrases, you can learn Hiranaga.
I recommend to learn Hiragana before Katakana.

You are British. So it might be easier to write Kataka than Hiragana.
Katakana is used so much curve but Hiragana is.
I recommend Hiragana first because it find easier the relation with Kanji even though both from Kanji.

Hi @Moreally. I'm not British. I'm actually a Filipino. Anyways thank you for the tips. I've visited japan once and notice they use combination of letters so I've still got a lot to learn haha

Memrise's basic japanese course is good for start, but it doesn't teach any grammar. I started with memrise and then enrolled on a real paid course
