We use THE plus the ordinal numbers when it comes before a noun.
This is THE fourth time I’ve ridden a horse.

That’s a good point😉. Yes, grade is a noun. For grades in school we use it without THE
He’s in fifth grade
Except in this instance which is an exception, I think we usually use THE

@newenglandgenie Does it mean that when there is no noun after the ordinal number, the ordinal number doesn’t need to have a “the” before it? And does it function as a normal adjective here?
