I would just replace "so young to die" with "He died at such a young age." It just sounds a but more natural.

Also, " ... he WOULD be in his 80's" is more correct.

"Might" implies doubt, "would" implies certainty. In this case, we need to use would because if was still alive, he certainly would be in his 80s.(no doubt)
