Why can American have a chat with a stranger in elevators?
When I first visited America, seeing that was good for me.
There is no such culture in Japan.

I think it's because Americans are more open and willing to meet new people. They're not as reserved.

Hey same thing happened to me once! I went down an elevator and some random stranger asked me if I wanna see him pull me some magic! I said why not and he amazed me with the coolest card trick I've ever seen!!! To answer your question, I think Americans choose to trust people. They won't doubt a thing you said until they find solid proof you're guilty. It's a really sweet quality, helps outsiders like me blend in real quick.

I think I also want to behave that way.

I was really surprised when I went to Japan, I would always say good morning and say like "it's hot outside!" And they would kind of just look at me like I was crazy. I'm not American but I think most of the western world has a similar culture of "small talk".

Depends on where you are in the US too. I live in Seattle and we don't like small talk very much :)

I found a good service at STARBUCKS in Seattle. When I ordered a drink, the clerk asked my name. After that,he wrote my name on the cup,and he called my name in order to deliver the goods with small talk.there is no service like that at starbucks in japan

Yes they have take names at Starbucks (and other coffee shops). So many people go there and order similar drinks so it is a lot easier to take names. I hope you enjoyed Seattle though!

Sounds like a good trip!
I became interested in Japan when I was very young, I noticed many shows and games I liked were from Japan. Seattle also has many Japanese events, such as Aki Matsuri, Bon Odori, and a Shinto shrine with many events throughout the year. In 2008 I went to Tokyo and enjoyed it very much! I hope I can go back to Japan and visit more places.
