No American would say a sentence like that. The grammar is correct, but this is like something that an Australian would say. In Australian English it means – my child gave me this old magazine.

Just how you wrote it there – that is perfect American English.
There is no use in using Australian English unless you are actually going to go to Australia. Nobody will understand you.
