A "garden" is a patch of soil where you grow flowers and vegetables.
A "yard" is the entire part of your property that doesn't include the house or driveway. It usually is covered in grass.
Some people have a garden in their yard. (My family back in the States does.)

In the US, the yard is where grass grows and the garden is where flowers or vegetables grow (you can have a flower garden, a vegetable garden, a herb garden, a rock garden, etc.). A garden is often a small corner or part of a yard.
I believe that the English use the word "garden" to mean everything surrounding your house, but I am not sure. I hope a Brit will also answer here.

@MetRon
I just looked it up on Wiktionary, and apparently that IS a thing! I always chalked it up to the Japanese language using the same word for both (which is still probably a big factor here) but I never realized that British people also say (or used to say) "garden" to refer to what we call a "yard" in the US. Thanks for that tidbit!

And indeed, I just showed a British friend a picture of a grassy yard and asked what he would say if his kid was out playing in it, and he used "garden".
