Or “But the idea first struck me.”
Your second version is incorrect in a few ways. But using ‘struck’ in this way is very good idiomatic English. So the revised second sentence sounds really good, natural, more exciting than the first sentence.
For future reference: strike is only used with the object. No ‘to’ after it. Example: I strike/struck the ball. Not I strike/struck to the ball.
