"Apparently, some of the less athletic types go nuts for this stuff."
I don't understand this line. Maybe somebody could rephrase it?

It means nerds or geeks. The not-jocks, not-athletic types of kids, the ones who don't play sports so they must be into other things like...this, whatever it is.
The way it is phrased makes it sound like he's talking about a hobby that he does not personally understand, so it is phrased as an outsider looking in (as the phrase goes).
So "apparently" is like, he's heard of this, he's been told this, but it's not how he personally feels or thinks, not his personal experience.
And "these less athletic types" again is phrased like he's talking about a group that he is an outsider to, that he does not identify with, doesn't really understand them.
And the way that it is phrased "less athletic types" makes it seem like the degree of athleticness is how everything is measured in his mind/priorities, so athletic things must be important to him as a person. So he is probably into athletic things, and finds the other types of people who don't do sports to be baffling.
But that's all nuance. The essence of what he's saying: "I have been told that some of the nerds/geeks get really enthusiastic and love this kind of stuff."
