thanks is informal way, thank you is formal way..

I'd say thanks for a more informal or nonchalant chat but thank you as a formal way to end a conversation

I never say "thanks". Even to friends I say "thank you" because "thanks" seems really sarcastic. It depends who you ask though, it is your own personal preference really.
