I'm going to Aichi sometime this month and I'm still undecided on whether I should buy/rent a sim card or not. I'll be there for 3 weeks and my accomodation has wifi. I'll be out most of the time though. Do you think I should buy/rent a sim card or are wifi hotspots easily found in public places in Nagoya/Okazaki/Takayama/Kanazawa? Main use is to communicate with people back home through whatsapp and maybe instagram. Thoughts?

Reliable/connectable free wifi spots are quite rare, even in Tokyo. You should rent a pocket wifi or buy a SIM card for your phone definitely. You can find cell phone company booths at airports.
