compete against = you are competing against someone/something that has a goal that is OPPOSITE to your goal. For example, in sports, teams compete against one another.
compete with = you are competing with someone/something, but not in opposition, it is more of a challenge. For example, if you have two runners in a race, they compete with the other person for the best time. Their goal and your goal are the same, to win the race. They are not trying to prevent you from running etc... This can also be used in a way where you "compete with yourself" to do better at something. If you are a runner, when you practice you compete with yourself to improve your time faster than you did before this point.
