The last one, ‘but’ might be more natural - or you can say "He wants to do nothing except/but leave."

‘Except’ often goes with ‘for’ so both are similar, ‘but’ separates phrases

I go to work every day except (for) Saturday and Sunday

I want to play football at the weekend, but I have a family, so they are more important.

@markb14 Thank you. But I want to know "but" in the sentences "He didn't do anything but his homework." and "He wants nothing but to leave." In these cases, can I substitute "but" with "except"? Thanks in advance.

The last one, ‘but’ might be more natural - or you can say "He wants to do nothing except/but leave."
