@pjhurd Thanks for explaining the phrase. But I'm still confused. It doesn't exist in any idiom dictionary. And when I searched the phrase I found a website that someone used the phrase differently.

@Bunch in this example, the review was referring to the speed of service. The expression still speaks of a line that divides fast from slow on a bell curve. The left half (side) is slower than average, and the right half (side) is faster than average.

@pjhurd I see. Is it possible to use the opposite? "on the fast side"
For example,
"It only took a few months for him to learn English and now he speaks English fluently. I think he's a little on the fast side."

@Bunch It is possible to use both, but I’ve never heard “on the fast side”.
“On the slow side” is only common because it is a nicer way of saying something negative. We do not need a nicer way of saying something positive, therefore we simply say exactly what we mean.
