what's the difference between "i got it" and " i get it"? in the sense of "I understood"

In conversation, they are the same. You can use either one.
If you are also saying, "stop telling me" then I would tend to say "I got it" but you can use either one and convey "stop telling me" by your tone of voice and/or facial expression.

They mean the same in the sense of 'I understand'. But there's a slight difference in their usage.
"I get it" is often used to dismiss an argument, umm to be put it simply it's used to tell someone they're wrong.
Eg: You want the job because it pays well. I get that. But you don't have the qualifications for it. Why don't you try another one.
"I got it" can be used to tell or verify that you understood something like instructions.
Eg: A: Turn left at the stop sign, go until you reach Smith Street, then turn left.
B: OK! I got it!
