My friend says the answer can be both a and b, so I'm confused.

I simplified a bit.
If somebody is currently drawing something then only A is correct.
I can think of a circumstance where b would be valid, but i don't think it's what you mean. If somebody indicates that they regularly try to draw something but don't specify what it is then b works. E.g "Every week i go to art club and try to draw things". "What do you try to draw?".

This question is used for a pre-test part of our research, so If the participants answer a. or b.,we should get them a point? Right?

That depends on the exact question and If you're generous :-) I'd think that most people answering (b) are thinking about the much more common scenario of where somebody is currently drawing something. Then (b) is a fairly common mistake. Otherwise they would have said "a and b", surely?
