these are the existing licei:
-liceo classico: focuses on latin, ancient greek and italian;
-liceo scientifico: focuses on maths and physics. you can choose if you want to study latin or not;
-liceo delle scienze umane: focuses on psychology and human science. you study latin;
-liceo linguistico: focuses on languages, you usually can choose your preference but it depends on each school. you usually learn three languages. you study latin too;
-liceo artistico: focuses on art in every form. you do drawings, paintings, sculptures and learn about multimedia and graphics. no latin here;
-liceo musicale: focuses on music, you learn to play two musical instruments and learn about music history. no latin.
after graduating liceo it is common to go to university.
the most popular istituti tecnici (actually there are lots of them) are:
-istituto tecnico industriale: focuses on many areas of the industry, depending on what you choose (ex. electronics, construction);
-istituto tecnico turistico (or del turismo): focuses on every aspect of tourism (financial, economic) and the study of two foreign languages;
and others like istituto tecnico nautico, agrario, and istituto tecnico per geometri.
when graduating istituto tecnico, you usually can go to work if you want to, or go to university.
gli istituti professionali teach you a job, usually a practical one, not lawyer or doctor for example. they are lots. the most popular are about fashion, hairstyling, alberghiero, odontotecnico, servizi commerciali, etc.
after graduating istituto professionale, you usually go to work on the area you learnt at school.
also there are many “indirizzi”, especially in istituti tecnici and professionali, that’s why there are lots, even if slightly different from each other.
as you see there’s a huge variety when it comes to choose a school in Italy.
