hi guys, I sort of get stuck in this sentence: the old man entered the hall, book in hand. Why it is grammatically incorrect if I say: the old man entered the hall, a book in hand. I was hoping maybe any of you can tell me the reason. thx :)

If you want to use "A book", you use "A book in his hand".
