@taedii: north Korea and South Korea began to abolish Chinese characters in 1948, so their young generation could hardly understand many of their own ancient cultural books and many heritages. The current Korean language(characters) isn't related to Chinese. Japan didn't do that, and there are still a lot of Chinese characters remained in Japanese

@taedii: a large amount of Korean words can date back to ancient Chinese. I am an advanced Korean learner, and I find it quite easy to memorize Korean words because I know their "roots" - corresponding Chinese characters. Since ancient China was extremely powerful, countries around China were heavily influenced by it, and ancient Chinese language also plays an important role in Asian languages such as Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese. The pronunciation of Sino-Korean words is very similar to Cantonese, (I can also speak Cantonese by the way, that's also why I find it easy to memorize Korean words, as a native Cantonese speaker, it really boosts my learning)the reason? Because ancient Chinese pronunciation remains in Cantonese, which is quite different from nowaday Mandarin.

@taedii: When hangul was created, it did refer to Chinese phonology, so some of the pronunciations are similar to middle Chinese(中古汉语). But they didn't keep any Chinese characters in hangul
