just say "the ottoman is furniture" adding the a isn't right

A furniture doesn't make sense, you wouldn't put "a" before "furniture".
Also if you are trying to talk about a type of thing you should phrase it like this "X is a type of Y", where X is the object you are talking about and Y is the catagory you are trying to catalogue it as. E.g. "Oak is a type of wood" or "Coke is a type of soft-drink"
You may have to put a/an in depending on the object, e.g. in your sentence, "Ottoman" on it's own sounds unnatural, you would have to say "An ottoman is a type of furniture".

@Zemouregal What about the word "fluid"? Why do people say "Drink plenty of fluids." even though the fluid is like water that is not countable?

Just because something like water is uncountable doesn't mean the category is, water is uncountable but fluid can either countable or uncountable depending on context.
But mainly something like "Drink lots of fluids" is a phrase that gets to bend the rules a little, i.e. you don't need several different kinds of fluids to make it plural, because it's a well-known phrase.

@Zemouregal So when you say "Drink lots of fluids," "lots of fluids" connotes different kinds of fluids? Like the fluids coke, milk, and water.

No, like I said a phrase like that gets to break the rules a little.
"Drink lots of fluids" just means "Drink a lot", generally refering to water. Parents remind kids to drink lots of fluids if they're doing a day of sports for example, even if the kids will only be drinking water.
