If you have really done a serious mistake it’s okay to say this to a friend too.

You can, but I'd warn that if your tone of voice doesn't make it clear that you're being serious, it can sound very sarcastic and insincere.

'I'm terribly sorry' or 'I'm awfully sorry' sound too polite and formal to me.
With a close friend I would say 'I'm really sorry', 'I'm very sorry' or 'I'm really, really sorry'.

Sometimes we use exaggerated politeness in English to be cheeky. You can use 'terribly sorry' in this way.
