I want to say "I portrayed or expressed my love for my hometown" or something like that.
How do I explain? Please advise.

Expressed works better in the context. In fact I don't think the two words have similar meanings at all.
He was portrayed as a hero.
It is discouraged to express one's controversial opinions in public.
