They can be used very similarly although not always interchangeably

“I found my pencil after looking in my bag” - then and afterwords in this sentence would be wrong

“I found my pencil in my bag and then I wrote a story.” - you could use after, afterward, or then in this example

“I eat an old apple and afterwords I felt sick” -Then and after would also work here

Basically there are circumstances you can use only after. But while using then and afterwords you normally can use after.

Maybe normally use after and you will be right often 😉
