Well, in case of "Reported speech" the first sentence is more accurate.
But the second sentence can be used if you put the words(said by others/your parents) between quotation marks to indicate that the sentence is quoted AS IT IS.
B: My parents told me "Don't judge a book by its covet"
Or
B: "Don't judge a book by its cover" My parents said.
